Walking in the cold – Just Walk!

The Huz is trying his level best to discourage me from walking today, the first day of the New Year. I can’t imagine what would make him think I would even listen to him talk me out of taking my walk after all the miles I’ve logged since January 1, 2003. The man surely must be suffering from a drastic dip in his testosterone level, that’s for sure.
It’s 20 degrees, feels like 11, overcast, trying to snow, winds gusting from the WNW at 14 mph so, God only knows what the real wind chill is. And frankly, I don’t want to know. It will only be one more excuse for me to not take my walk.
(Whereas, it’s 71 degrees currently in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida, and that’s where we’re headed this coming Friday for a month, so I’ll be reporting from down there.)
I pull on my trusty Spyder dual-shell, snow boarder’s coat over my Under Armor cold gear tights and zip neck top, and speaking of tops, after I don my Rocky-the-Flying Squirrel aviator’s hat – flaps down and buckled – and out I go.
My I-pod is my savior – a necessity for my daily walks, especially on a day like this. I use my music to soothe the psyche, help put me in a meditative mood and to distract me from my chronic aches and pains. I find that I always walk with more purpose when my favorite music plays in one ear.
And, Phooey, I say, to those who pout, scoff and cry, “I can ONLY listen to my music in stereo!” So, OK, then, suit yourself and don’t listen to music while you walk. I don’t care. I find that it’s usually people with this ‘tude that desperately need to make daily walking a lifelong, healthy habit and refuse to by using every other excuse in the book.
All I have to say is, it’s WAY safer to listen with only one earphone in your ear than to plug up both ears so you can’t hear anyone approaching you from the side or behind, let alone that runaway semi that’s currently blowing and blaring down on you like the frenetically flashing freight train it is.
Walk on, sisters and brothers. It’s a brand New Year and a brand new day. Make the most of it. Give it all you’ve got!
PS: Kudos to Jim Belushi for being filmed eating a nice, big, juicy, red apple while talking to a pal, watching the Rose Bowl from the stands. What a great message he sends to other males out there that they don’t have to eat only pokey bait junk at these sporting events. He’s on the right track even if he’s a tad chubby.

And speaking of chubby, what happened to one of the most handsome men in the world, Emeril Lagasse? Jeez, has he packed on the pounds since he got remarried!

I had the pleasure of meeting him in person a few years ago and he was a veritable vision of virility. He’s still cute, but looks like he’s gonna explode any second and that can’t be too healthy for a guy who lives on pork fat.

However, if he reads my book, Commit To Get Fit, cuts the white starch and sugar from his diet and takes up daily walking, he’ll be back in tip-top shape in the time it takes him to skin, bone and cook one of his famous tur-duck-ins – well, almost.

BEST,  Laura
